A Nighttime Otter, a Studio Full of Magic, and a First Friday to Remember

There’s a special kind of electricity that fills the studio when a new character comes to life on the canvas. Over the past few weeks, my easel has been home to a little nighttime wanderer — an otter with a coffee cup, a backpack full of art supplies, and a story that seems to unfold with every brushstroke.

What began as a simple pencil sketch quickly grew into a full urban scene. The earliest lines captured the otter’s posture and personality: upright, curious, and ready for adventure. Behind him, the architecture hinted at a cozy nighttime city — glowing windows, a crescent moon, and the suggestion of a world that stays awake just long enough for inspiration to strike.

As the background layers deepened, the mood shifted. Rich blues and warm browns carved out the nighttime atmosphere, and the otter’s world started to feel lived‑in. The cobblestone street, the soft glow from the shop windows, and the tiny details — like the smartphone at his feet — added a modern, playful twist. Each stage felt like watching a character step closer to the spotlight.

And then came the moment when everything clicked: the otter fully painted, standing proudly in front of the “Otter Shop,” coffee in paw, backpack slung over his shoulder, ready to take on the night. It’s a scene that blends whimsy with everyday life, and it’s been such a joy to bring him into the world.

Join Me for the Upcoming First Friday at Otter Shop!

That same spirit of creativity is exactly what I’m bringing to First Friday at Otter Shop.

On February 6 from 6–9pm, I’ll be the featured artist at this charming Fort Collins boutique. The studio‑inspired flyer captures the vibe perfectly — warm light spilling from big windows, easels set up with colorful paintings, and a space that feels like it’s buzzing with possibility. It’s the kind of place where art feels alive, where conversations spark easily, and where community and creativity meet in the best way.

I’ll be sharing original paintings, chatting about process, and celebrating the joy of making art that feels playful, heartfelt, and a little bit magical. And yes — the otter will be there too, ready for his First Friday debut.

If you’re in the area, I’d love for you to stop by, say hello, and soak in the creative energy with us. Nights like this remind me why I paint: to connect, to tell stories, and to bring a little more wonder into the world.
