First Friday Art Walk at Edge Optics: Sharing Art, Stories, and Creativity
At this month's First Friday Art Walk at Edge Optics, I had the opportunity to share my artwork with the Fort Collins community, talk with visitors about creativity, and invite people to participate in a collaborative painting project. What I expected to be an evening of displaying artwork became so much more. It became a night of connection, inspiration, and community.
From the moment the doors opened, people began stopping by my booth to browse paintings, ask questions, and share stories of their own. Some were experienced artists, some were curious beginners, and others simply enjoyed looking at art and learning about the creative process. Every conversation added something unique to the evening.
More Than Just Paintings on Display
My booth featured a collection of original artwork, including landscapes, seasonal paintings, animal portraits, local architecture, decorative bottles, coasters, miniature paintings, and mixed-media pieces. Visitors enjoyed exploring the variety of subjects and often stopped to ask about the inspiration behind specific works.
One of my favorite moments as an artist is hearing what people see in a painting. Sometimes a landscape reminds someone of a family vacation. A winter scene brings back childhood memories. A horse painting sparks a conversation about a beloved animal or favorite pastime. Every viewer brings their own story to the artwork, and I love hearing those connections.
Sharing the Stories Behind the Paintings
Art becomes even more meaningful when it sparks conversation.
Throughout the evening, visitors stopped to ask about painting techniques, inspiration, and the stories behind individual pieces.
These conversations are often my favorite part of an event. They remind me that artwork doesn't end when the painting is finished. A painting continues to tell new stories every time someone connects with it.
The Power of A Single Finger
One of the most popular features of the evening was the interactive community canvas.
Visitors were invited to choose a paint color and add color, swirl, flower, or small design to a collaborative community painting.
What happened next was exactly why I love community art.
People who initially said, "I'm not artistic," stepped forward and participated. Friends encouraged one another. Visitors spent time choosing colors and discussing where to place their contributions.
Watching Community Art Come to Life
As the evening progressed, the collaborative painting took on a life of its own.
Each visitor added something different, creating a piece that reflected the creativity of the entire community rather than any one individual.

The project became one of the evening's biggest conversation starters and showed that creativity truly is for everyone.
Sharing Upcoming Classes and Events
The Art Walk provided a wonderful opportunity to introduce upcoming painting classes, workshops, and special events.
Many guests were excited to learn that my classes are designed for all skill levels, including complete beginners.
One featured project that generated significant interest was the upcoming Paint a Guinea Pig Fundraiser event.
Making Art Accessible
A common theme throughout the night was hearing visitors say they wished they could paint.
The truth is, creativity isn't about perfection. It's about curiosity, exploration, and the willingness to try something new.
Several guests shared stories about wanting to start painting again after years away from art, while others were curious about trying a class for the very first time.
Encouraging people to discover their own creative abilities is one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching.
Families, Friends, and New Connections
One of the highlights of the evening was seeing people of all ages enjoying the artwork together.
Families stopped by to browse paintings, children joined activities, and friends spent time discussing favorite pieces.
Art has a unique way of bringing people together, and this event was full of moments that demonstrated that beautifully.
A Busy Evening of Creativity and Community
The booth remained active all evening as visitors explored artwork, participated in activities, and engaged in conversation.
There was a wonderful energy throughout the evening that reflected the creativity and support of the local community.
Looking Ahead
The event also provided an opportunity to preview current works in progress and discuss future plans.
Visitors enjoyed seeing upcoming projects and learning about future classes, workshops, fundraisers, and community art events.
The enthusiasm and encouragement shared throughout the evening were incredible reminders of how important local art events can be in bringing people together.
