Guardians of the Mountains: A Day of Great Pyrenees and Creative Joy

Some days in the studio feel like ordinary workdays… and then there are days when the whole room hums with that spark — the kind that reminds me why I teach, why I paint, and why art has always been my favorite way of connecting with people.

This week’s spark came from a special moment: one of the Art Walk prize winners stopped by to pick up his personalized painting. He had brought the reference photo that inspired it, and seeing the two side by side — the real Great Pyrenees and the painted version — felt like a celebration of creativity, community, and the joy of giving art a new life.

The Gentle Giants Who Inspired Us

Painting a Great Pyrenees is no small task. Their thick, layered fur and soft, shifting shadows require patience and a willingness to build the piece slowly. This one, especially, was a challenge — so many layers, so many subtle transitions, and that delicate balance between softness and structure.

But that’s also what made it rewarding.

Each version of the dog captured a slightly different mood. Some looked relaxed and dreamy, others alert and watchful, but all of them held that unmistakable guardian spirit.

Seeing the real dog and the finished painting together was a reminder of why personalized art matters: it turns a moment, a memory, or a beloved animal into something lasting.

Why These Moments Matter

Art isn’t just about technique. It’s about:

  • slowing down

  • noticing the details

  • honoring the animals and landscapes that shape our lives

  • and creating something that feels personal and meaningful

Moments like this — a winner picking up a painting made just for them — are the heart of what makes community art so special.

Until the Next Painting

Thank you to everyone who stopped by during the Art Walk, entered the scratch‑off giveaways, and shared stories, smiles, and inspiration.

And to the prize winners: your excitement fuels mine. I love bringing your ideas and photos to life, even when the painting pushes me, layer by layer, into new territory.

I can’t wait to see what the next Art Walk brings.
