A Lighthouse Through the Mist

On a beautiful afternoon at Petrichor Collective, artists gathered to create their own interpretation of Keeper of the Mist, a coastal lighthouse scene inspired by one of Oregon's most iconic landmarks. Painters of all experience levels joined together to learn new techniques, build confidence, and enjoy an afternoon of creativity.

The Inspiration Behind Keeper of the Mist

Every painting has a story, and the inspiration for Keeper of the Mist began along the rugged Oregon Coast.

The workshop painting was inspired by the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, located just north of Newport, Oregon. Rising above dramatic cliffs and overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the lighthouse has become one of Oregon's most recognizable coastal landmarks. The combination of rocky shorelines, rolling waves, and expansive skies provided the perfect subject for this painting experience.

The goal wasn't to create an exact replica of the scene but rather to capture the spirit of the Oregon coast through color, texture, and imagination.

The Featured Painting

Participants were introduced to the project and shown the finished sample painting that would serve as their guide throughout the workshop.

Immediately, guests began envisioning how they would make the painting their own while learning techniques for skies, water, shorelines, and architectural details.

A Warm Welcome to Creativity

Petrichor Collective provided the perfect setting for an afternoon of artistic exploration. Surrounded by stone walls, artwork, and creative energy, participants settled into their workspaces and prepared to begin.

Building the Foundation

Every masterpiece starts with a foundation. Artists began by creating atmospheric skies using simple texturing techniques before sketching the lighthouse and landscape elements.

Creating textured skies and establishing the composition.

Participants quickly discovered that complex paintings become approachable when broken into simple, manageable steps.

Exploring Color and Texture

One of the most enjoyable parts of the workshop was experimenting with paint colors and learning how layering creates depth and movement.

Bringing the Ocean to Life

With the sky established, attention turned toward the rolling Pacific waves. Layers of blues, teals, and whites were used to create movement and depth.

Personalized Guidance

One of the most rewarding aspects of the event was providing individual instruction tailored to each artist's needs.

These small moments of coaching often led to breakthrough moments for participants who may have initially doubted their abilities

The Lighthouse Emerges

The most exciting stage of the painting was bringing the lighthouse itself to life.

With every brushstroke, the Yaquina Head-inspired lighthouse became more recognizable and striking.

What Participants Had to Say

One of the comments heard several times throughout the workshop was:

"You make it look so easy!"

That comment perfectly captures one of the goals of Paintings by JF: helping people discover that painting is achievable when broken down into simple, practical steps.

Another attendee shared this wonderful feedback after the event:

"I joined Jill today for the 'Keeper of the Mist' and she is such a great instructor and her passion for art is contagious." — Abby

Comments like these remind us that the true success of an event isn't measured only by the finished artwork but by the confidence participants gain along the way.

Celebrating Finished Masterpieces

The workshop concluded with everyone proudly displaying their completed paintings.

Looking across the completed collection revealed something special. Although everyone began with the same inspiration and instruction, every painting was uniquely personal.

Some artists emphasized dramatic skies. Others focused on the ocean. Some highlighted shoreline textures, while others refined the lighthouse itself. Every canvas told its own story.

More Than a Painting Class

The Keeper of the Mist workshop was about much more than painting.

It was about:

  • Learning new skills

  • Connecting with others

  • Celebrating progress

  • Creating lasting memories

From the first textured cloud to the final lighthouse detail, participants embraced the creative journey together.

As the completed paintings proved, creativity is not reserved for experienced artists. With encouragement, guidance, and a willingness to try something new, anyone can create something beautiful.
